Bahamas Spring 2008 - Page 08

This is the same fish camp looking back from the open pit well.

We finally found some fishermen and they had a problem with an air pump. I offered to fix the pump, so they brought it to us. I manufactured a new head gasket from materials on board Samana.

I brought the air pump back to camp the next morning. Fisherman Joe was the only one there as the others were out on the reef fishing. Joe's responsibility is cooking.

Art is giving Neptune his portion of champaign at Samana Cay. This was the first step in christening Samana at her name sake Cay. The Andre champaign was supplied by Dennis Templeton of Lake City, Minnesota.

Then champaign is poured on the deck of Samana with words spoken of the christening or re-christening of Samana. We do not know if Samana was named after Samana Cay. However, she is now christened at anchor between Samana Cay and Propeller Cay in the Bahamas.

The last toast and portion of champaign is for the crew! Then a special toast for Rod TerBeest who lost good crew, Jean, when she left to cruise with Art.

Jean gives her toast of sparkling apple juice to Neptune, Samana, and to the crew. Notice she is wearing the Ragamuffin 3 Racing Team hat provided by Captain Rod TerBeest who she used to crew for before going cruising. We dressed for the occasion with Samana Crew T-shirts and the special hat from Rod.

We then left Samana Cay and went to Long Cay where we found a homemade sailing vessel with a tree trunk for a mast. Notice the large nest of sticks on the deck. This boat had been here for some time.

On our dinghy ride to Long Cay to visit Albert Town we came across these flamingos in the shallows eating shrimp. Click on the picture to make it larger and then click again to see the flamingos. Use the back button on the browser to come back to this page.
